What does the word "vitamin" mean?

Vitamins are organic compounds found naturally in food. Vitamins are essential for our bodies to absorb nutrients from the foods we eat. The body cannot make vitamins; therefore, they must be obtained from food.

There are two types if vitamins: water soluble, and fat soluble. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water easily. Examples include vitamin C,B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid, and choline. The liver and fatty tissue are the main storage places for fat-soluble vitamins. Examples include vitamin D, E, K, A, and beta carotene.

Vitamins can be classified according to biological activity. There are eight major vitamin groups:

  • A - Vital for healthy growth.
  • C - essential for proper nerve function, and energy production.
  • D - essential for healthy teeth and bones.
  • E is required for good vision and reproduction.
  • K - Essential for healthy muscles and nerves.
  • P - Vital for strong bones and teeth.
  • Q - aids digestion, absorption and absorption iron
  • R – Required for making red blood vessels.

The recommended daily allowance of vitamins (RDA), varies depending upon age, gender, physical condition, and other factors. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sets RDA values.

Women who are pregnant, nursing or breastfeeding need more than the RDA. Pregnant women require 4000 micrograms daily during pregnancy, and 2500 micrograms every day after birth. Breastfeeding mothers need 5000 micrograms per day when breast milk is being produced.
